Headie One changes tack on new album ‘GANG’, teaming up with Fred Again to create an altogether different sound. Almost all gone are the bars about Drill staples like selling drugs and inner-city violence, replaced by genuine introspection and the exploration of some of the Tottenham rapper’s darkest and most personal thoughts. Features are sparse, but carefully considered; FKA Twigs, Sampha and Jamie XX lend the record some serious Pop credentials. It’s an important step for Headie, and for British music; ‘GANG’ is an evolution, it’s well outside of Drill’s remit but is still very much indebted to it. It’s an evolution, a genuinely innovative crossover, rather than simply a shot at the mainstream in the vein of Dizzee’s ‘Tongue N’ Cheek,’ for example. Stream below via SoundCloud.
