On Thursday this week, Vince Staples set up a GoFundMe campaign in response to criticism of his music and his stage shows in a bid to raise $2m to ensure his early retirement, effective immediately; “You’ll never hear from me again. No songs, no interviews”. Failure to donate, then, amounts to acceptance: “Get off my dick or fund my lifestyle.”
A day later comes new track ‘Get The Fuck Off My Dick’, and it becomes immediately apparent that we’ve fallen victim to a marketing stunt courtesy of Staples’ label. Well played Def Jam, very well played. “Hard to tell which one more perfect, man my art or my bitch” raps Staples over sparse but hard-hitting production.
