“Album is pure rap energy; the ugly somehow beautiful. I’ve been waiting to put it out, please enjoy” says Shirt of his debut album ‘PURE BEAUTY’. The media narrative surrounding the album generally surrounds the fact that this is the first Hip Hop release to come from Jack White’s Third Man Records, but to ignore it as a body of work in its own right is to deny it the credit it deserves. Shirt’s music is clearly indebted to ‘classic’ New York Hip Hop, but a revivalist he is not. ‘PURE BEAUTY’ merely taps the genre for its confidence, around which it builds its own, fresh aesthetic.
