‘Prima Donna’ begins with a few lines of ‘This Little Light Of Mine’, before the narrator is quickly interrupted by a gunshot to the head. It’s the kind of shock tactic that you’d expect from Vince Staples’ West Coast pre-decessors and influences Nate Dogg or Warren G, but it’s placed in an altogether new context. The EP then continues to follow an in-character Staples progressing from gangbanger to Hip Hop star. ‘Nothing new there then’, you’d be forgiven for thinking, unless of course the story was being told in reverse, and in a manner that is demonstrably no more appealing from beginning to end [whether you’re going chronologically or track by track].
