Top Dawg Entertainment’s ‘90059’ release strategy has certainly been an interesting one, as the label chose to release the new album from Jay Rock as soon as sufficient pre-orders the cover the project’s cost had been purchased. On to the album itself, and it feels like a cult classic from the outset. Jay Rock’s gruff flow presides over confident, West Coast beats across singles ‘Gumbo‘, ‘90059‘ and ‘Easy Bake‘. With an all-star featured cast of SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Macy Gray, Busta Rhymes, Isaiah Rashad & more it would be easy for JR’s message to get lost.
