Young Fathers won the Mercury Prize with their last album, ‘Dead‘. Far more importantly, it was named our favourite album of 2014. Not a single laurel, however, was rested upon by the Edinburgh trio, and they got straight back into the studio and recorded their new, controversially-titled ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’. In short, ‘WMABMT’ is an absolute triumph. It’s punctuated by “earworm” hooks throughout, and is actually some of their most accessible work so far; tracks like ‘Nest’ are actually straight-up Pop music. However, the whole thing is placed firmly within their weird, jarring framework; ‘Old Rock N Roll’, which goes some way to explaining that album title, is probably the most experimental on the record.
